Workout Clothes.. How to Choose the Right Ones

Workout Clothes.. How to Choose the Right Ones

August 05, 2018

I love high quality workout clothes. Why? Because they last forever. Now with that being said I often struggle mentally at times to pay $100 for one pair of yoga pants. Back in January we spent some time in Scottsdale, Arizona and I purchased a pair of yoga pants that cost $120. Crazy right? But they were super cute and they should last forever, right? Wrong! After we got back home from our trip I wore them to Orange Theory. If you have never been to Orange Theory half the class is cardio and the other half is weight lifting. So I wore my stupidly expensive new pants to class, and they turned out to be the most uncomfortable work out pants I had ever bought! What made them so uncomfortable? It turns out the crotch seam was a straight stitch so anytime I did a squat I was yanking my pants out of a sensitive area because it was so uncomfortable! I went home and told my husband I was never wearing those work out pants again. It also prompted me to look at my other work pants and I noticed the crotch seams were all angled for comfort.

Now what?

Since this was not the first time I'd bought expensive workout clothes and found them uncomfortable once I got to the gym my hubby asked me what I was going to do about it. Umm.. nothing? Was being annoyed that I had bought workout clothes I couldn't actually wear to work out in an option? It wasn't. He suggested I start a company that would have the high quality clothes I craved but with a lower price point and that you could comfortably workout in. I laughed and said it wasn't that easy. He said it was. Therefor, I decided to start Asana Yoga Wear. In all my research on different fabrics and styles of workout clothes I've come up with some great things for you to look for in your new workout clothes!

Pick Workhorse Fabrics- What does that mean? That means some fabrics will pull sweat away from your skin while others will absorb it.

  • Nylon-

    • You want to look for a material that will wick the sweat away from your body and will keep you cool.
    • Why is nylon good for workout clothes? It's soft, mildew resistant and dries quickly. Nylon is breathable and wicks sweat away from the skin. It has great stretch and recovery so your workout clothes will move with you and it is also abrasion resistant.

  • Polyester-

    • Polyester is truly a workhorse of the workout clothes. You will must often see this on labels. It's durable, wrinkle resistant, lightweight, breathable and non-absorbant so it will not absorb your sweat into the material. The nice thing about polyester is that it also repeals UV rays and insulates you when wet.

  • Spandex

    • Spandex is what gives your workout clothes the stretch you need so that they move with you. What's crazy is that spandex can expand to 600 percent of it's size and will still snap back to it's original shape. Spandex is breathable, moisture wicking and dries quickly. You don't want to put spandex in the dryer. This can cause it to loose elasticity.

  • Cotton

    • While 100% cotton is not a good option for a sweaty workout combining cotton and spandex together lends itself to a great workout option. A cotton/spandex blend is a perfect choice for low sweat activities such as yoga and weight training.

What else should you consider when buying your workout clothes?

  • Get the right fit. You don't want to constantly be readjusting your clothing. If going to yoga select something that is fitted. You don't want to be doing downward dog and have your shirt around your neck!
  • UV Protection if you will be exercising outside
  • Reflective features if exercising at night
  • Layerability. I often leave the gym and stay in my workout clothes all day, gross right?! So in the wintertime being able to layer jackets and hoodies over my clothes are a necessity.
  • Is it comfortable for all day wear? This is huge for me. I tend to wear yoga pants and tank tops all day so it needs to be comfortable for all day.
  • Look for a tighter fit/compression fit in your pants. There is nothing worse than your pants sagging because they are too lose and can't hold up to moving around.

I hope this helps you in choosing the correct workout clothes in the future. As always if I can answer any questions at all please email me here.

STEP 1: What is your BAND Size?

Using a tape measure place is directly under your bust. Make sure it is snug and round to the nearest whole number. If it is even add 4 inches. If it's odd add 5 inches. Your band is the sum of those calculations. For example if you measured 34 inches your band size is 38 or if you measured 33 inches your band size is 38.

STEP 2: What is your BUST Size?

Using a tape measure measure around the widest part of your chest (nipple level). Round to the nearest whole number.

STEP 3: What is your CUP Size?

Subtract your band size from your bust size and refer to the chart below. Example 37 inch bust - 34 inch band size = 3 inches. That's a 34C.
